Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio became as messy during matches as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
